This paper gives an overview of UK-Latin America Food & Drink Trade
Latin America has a long tradition of food production, which includes both fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and meat, as well as prepared foods that
supply much of the domestic market and are exported all over the world. The region also exports alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, which include coffee, wine and spirits that are renowned globally. For its part, the United Kingdom (UK) is not selfsufficient in food given its geographical position and size; only 52% of the food consumed in the UK originates in the country. Almost half of raw materials are sourced overseas, with the European Union (EU) a major market that accounts for around a third. However, the UK’s decision to leave the EU, the oncoming Brexit, is opening doors to consider other regions, so Brexit has the potential to boost the country’s food and drinks trade with Latin America.
