Cristina Cortes, CEO of Canning House, gives evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee

On Tuesday 29th January Cristina Cortes, CEO of Canning House, and Anthony Pereira, Director of the King’s Brazil Institute, gave evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee on the political and economic developments in Chile, Argentina and Brazil.

Their discussion highlighted that democracy is relatively strong in the Southern Cone, but there are a number of challenges to it. Corruption and crime are deeply-rooted problems, and some voters have become increasingly disillusioned. In certain instances there also seems to be a disconnection between the people and the politicians and institutions that are intended to represent them. Watch the full discussion below.
