A Talk With Sergio Jaramillo Caro, the Colombian High Commissioner for Peace

We are delighted to welcome Sergio Jaramillo Caro, the Colombian High Commissioner for Peace, to give a talk at Canning House on the peace process and other related developments in Colombia.

Dr Jaramillo Caro's CV is extensive to say the least. He has been advisor to the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomacy for Peace programme, Political Counsellor at the Embassy of Colombia in France, advisor on political and strategic issues at the Ministry of Defence, and responsible for the development, coordination and drafting of the Defence and Democratic Security Policy.

Dr Jaramillo Caro was Executive Director of the Ideas for Peace Foundation (FIP), an influential think-tank on conflict and post-conflict analysis. He is the author of several essays and articles published in “El Tiempo” daily newspaper.

He worked with President Juan Manuel Santos as Deputy Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs at the Ministry of Defence researcher at Los Andes University Faculty of Administration, where he led the creation of Friends of La Macarena, a scheme that promoted bridges between business, politics and territorial consolidation.

He has been National Security Advisor and High Commissioner for Peace of President Santos’ government from 2010. In September 2012 he was appointed Head of the Government’s team in charge of the exploratory phase of talks with the FARC.

Dr. Jaramillo Caro was responsible for the secret negotiations that led to the signing of the "General Agreement for the Termination of the conflict" framework between the Colombian Government and FARC in August 2012 and he is part of the Government’s delegation at the talks in Havana, Cuba. With Humberto De La Calle, Chief Negotiator of the Government at Havana, he is responsible for leading the conceptual strategy throughout the peace process with FARC.
