Argentine and Uruguay Elections 2019 – will they reinforce or derail Mercosur?

  • Committee Room 10,  House of Commons, Westminster SW1A 0AA
  • 18.00 - 20.00

Two of the four Southern Cone countries that make up the Mercosur alliance head to the polls on Sunday 27 October 2019. Will the incoming governments reinforce or derail the alliance?

Organised with the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Latin America

Big change could be on the horizon for Argentina and Uruguay, with both countries set for a closely contested presidential race on 27 October. These general elections will have important implications for the future of Mercosur, a trade bloc comprising the two countries and Brazil and Paraguay (with Venezuela suspended in 2017), which just weeks ago negotiated a trade agreement with the EU following 20 years of talks.

It is not yet clear if Argentina and Uruguay’s new governments will persevere with their predecessors’ ambitions for closer trading links with Europe and the world, or even what their hopes are for intra-alliance relations going forward.

Canning House invites a panel of experts to analyse the 27 October election results, making predictions for the shifting political and economic landscape in the countries - and the wider region, and what is means for Mercosur.
