On 12 October Bolivia’s President Evo Morales and his ruling left-wing party, Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), declared victory in the general elections.
MAS and local media cite exit polls giving Morales a landslide 59.7% of the vote for his third consecutive mandate, well ahead of Samuel Doria Medina of the centre-right Unidad Demócrata (UD), who exit polls gave 25.1% of the vote.
The MAS also looks set to take eight of Bolivia’s nine departments, up from seven in the last (2009) election and to have won Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s economic powerhouse in the east. While victory in Santa Cruz is a major boost for the government, the MAS looks to be just short of its coveted two-thirds majority in the 166-member bicameral legislature.
