Brexit and Immigration: What are the Rights of EU Citizens?

  • SCI Belgrave Square, 14/15 Belgrave Square, London

This event, given the remit of Canning House, will focus on the rights of Spanish and Portuguese citizens currently residing in the UK, as well as the looking at immigration law for citizens of Spain and Portugal currently living in those countries.

Theresa May's outline on 17/01/2017 for the UK's plan to leave the EU did not give a clear indication of how the rights of EU citizens currently living and working in the UK would be affected. Similarly, the implication that the government will be pursuing a 'hard Brexit' means that future immigration and free movement from residents of EU countries to the UK looks likely to be curtailed at the very least, but it is still unclear to what extent. This event, given the remit of Canning House, will focus on the rights of Spanish and Portuguese citizens currently residing in the UK, as well as the looking at immigration law for citizens of Spain and Portugal currently living in those countries. Furthermore, as Spain hosts the largest Latin American national population, there are also interest points of discussion for people from countries in that region.

To speak at this event we are delighted to welcome Fernando Lanza, a Consultant at Ashton Ross Law, a firm that specialises in immigration law; Guy Davison, a barrister and part-time judge, and expert on immigration matters who has appeared on Sky News, LBC Radio and the World Service; Nicolas Hatton, Founder and Co-Chair of the 3 million, support network which campaigns to safeguard and guarantee the rights of EU citizens in the UK and British citizens in Europe after Brexit; and to chair, Beatriz Araújo, a Canning House Trustee and Partner at Baker & McKenzie.
