Canning House and the Instituto Cervantes are delighted to welcome María Odette Canivell and Gerald Martin to deliver a lecture on Miguel Angel Asturias, Nobel-prize winning Guatemalan poet-diplomat, novelist, playwright and journalist. Asturias, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1967 for Hombres de maíz (1949), has been credited with contributing to the establishment of Latin American literature in the Western world, and is considered a precursor to the Latin American boom of the 1960s and '70s.

Spanish political analysts and commentators Ignacio Jurado and Ramón González Férriz from the Spain-based political consultancy and pollsters quantio, together with the Catalan political scientist, Berta Barbet, will be drawing upon the latest polling data to assess the likely outcome of the 21st December Catalan elections, as well as analysing the political and commercial implications of these likely results for Catalonia, Spain and Europe more generally. Canning House President Miriam González Durántez will be moderating the discussion, which will be followed by a Q&A session with the panellists.

On 19th November, Chileans went to the polls to elect a new president. With no single candidate garnering over 50% of the vote, former president (2010-2014) Sebastian Piñera will now face centre-left candidate Alejandro Guillier in the run-off on 17th December.
