The new series Thinking Ibero-America invites personalities from this vast cultural region and British experts to share and discuss their visions. The first instalment brings together Mexican novelist Èlmer Mendoza, a representative of the so-called narco-literature, and Dr. Peter Watt, a Hispanist from the University of Sheffield who specialises in human rights and organised crime.

Latin American Footballers’ Alliance (LAFA, www.latamfa.com ) & Canning House are hosting the following fundraising reception for Brazilian football team Associação Chapecoense de Futebol. The plane carrying the team tragically crashed on November 28th 2016 as they travelled to play the first leg of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana final against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional, in Medellín.

Ecuador voted on Sunday to elect a new president with initial results leaving Lenín Moreno just short of the 40% required for an outright victory over rightwing rival Guillermo Lasso, meaning a run-off will take place. The results of this election hold a wider significance to the region, as well as globally, with Ecuador viewed as one of the few nation-states with a left-wing ruling government.
